Perrysburg shares a distinction with our capital city Washington D.C.. It is the only city in the country entirely laid out by the United States Government. This was done in 1816 and it was named for Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry who had won the Battle of Lake Erie not far away. This battle ended the British occupation on American soil. The city became an important distribution center for Lake Erie. As timber began to be harvested here at the edge of the Great Black Swamp, Perrysburg became an important player in the lumber industry also.

It was a very diverse group of people who settled in the town and brought with them their own preferences for architectural style. A casual walk down the historic district will verify this. Different styles include Greek revival, Gothic revival, Italiante, Queen Anne, Shingle, French Second Empire, Tudor, Spanish Colonial revival, and sometimes combinations of several of the above.

Located on the banks of the Maumee River, Perrysburg is set apart from neighboring communities geographically. The Maumee (a river designated "scenic" by the State Department of Natural Resources) is northern most boundary. The river must be crossed in order to gain access to Perrysburg except when approaching from the South. The namesake statue Commodore Perry sits at the base of the business district, in Hood Park, overlooking the Maumee and ever protecting our fair city from the British.

Shopping in Perrysburg is an adventure with lots of tiny shops located in the old restored buildings. The service in these establishments is reminiscent of the "old days" with friendly, knowledgeable, and "personal" care given to every customer. Today, Perrsyburg is in a growing spurt. The areas outside the original square mile are being developed. Home builders, businesses, fast food restaurants, and services are finding Perrsyburg an ideal location. Perrysburg's access to State Route 475, 75, and 80 make transportation anywhere, easy and efficient. The community has long been recognized as a "family oriented" city and a great place to raise children.
